Piracy – the unauthorised spread of copyrighted work – is a growing problem. Two options are available to counteract such spread: (i) copy protection (prevention) and (ii) forensic watermarking, where the source of the spreading is traced. The collusion attack, in which several; different watermarked copies of the same content are superimposed to detect the watermark is a powerful form of attack against forensic watermarks. Within CREST researchers are investigating how the data in the watermarks can best be chosen to provide resistance against collusion attacks. This is being realised at both a theoretical (coding theory) and practical (optimisation) level.

Project results
CREST has achieved outstanding results. The contributions of CREST range from fundamental results in coding theory (channel capacity of the most used attack model) to practical methods for calculating error probabilities and new codes for dynamic tracing.
